South Africa offers a massive playground of quieter regions, with quiet roads of which many are gravel. While it also offers some of the finest and most well-organised cycle races in the world, it has far more to offer than just that....i.e. places where bike packers and the like can just go and ride, have a lot of fun, and not have to pay big entry fees.
At the same time, many still like a challenge. To this end, we challenge you with (1,000) "Miler"....no entry fees, no razmattaz, no medals and T-shirts. It isn't an event, and the rider takes 100% responsibility for all their own organisation, safety and logistics.
Just go and ride a 1,000 Mile route uninterrupted and unsupported, at any time of year, and earn the satisfaction of calling yourself a "Miler". Fulfil the criteria, and we will add you to the "Milers" wall of fame on this site.
The basic criteria for a "Miler" attempt:
For background, click on link below:
- Ride 1,000 miles "uninterrupted". Uninterrupted means in one continuous trip, resting and sleeping along the way, but not leaving the route for any significant period of time (for example, no going home for a week and returning to the route later to finish the ride).
- Ride "supported" or "unsupported". Just indicate to us which option you take. Riding "unsupported" basically means no outside assistance along the route. A rider can make use of commercially available services along the way (but not transport services) only, and must be self-propelled at all times (see the page "Principles/Guidelines for an Unsupported or Solo Unsupported Challenge"). Click on link below for the guidelines and principles of unsupported riding: Grit, Gravel and Grind - The “Miler” Club: Principles/Guidelines for an Unsupported or Solo Unsupported Challenge (milerclubsa.blogspot.com)
- Choose any one of our ready-mapped routes, where you can compare your performance with other riders that have done them...or even chase the route's fastest known time (FKT).
- Alternatively, create your own cool route. While 1,000 miles is 1,610km, for a "Miler" challenge route we allow some leeway, the allowed distance range for our routes being from 1,570km to 1,750km. The route needs to have at least 33.3% gravel in it, and we prefer routes that are not repetitive (i.e. not a 400km x 4 ride).
- Should you wish to sign up for the "Miler" Challenge on one of our mapped routes of your choice, get yourself a satellite tracker, and furnish us in advance with your satellite tracker link in advance, because we'd love to dot watch and keep in touch as you ride. Then furnish us with the GPX tracks afterwards....and become part of the happy group of "Milers". If you choose your own route, please send us your mapped route in advance as well.
